The garden draws inspiration from a nostalgic era, echoing the distinctive style of mid-century Australian residential homes. It captures the spirit of a time when proud homeowners dedicated their weekends to cultivating gardens that reflected personal pride and achievement. This vision is deeply rooted in my own family’s tradition of weekend gardening—a shared practice among many in our aging community, including those now living with Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

By honoring this legacy, the garden not only celebrates family heritage but also acknowledges the broader community affected by these challenging conditions. It aims to raise awareness and appreciation for the caregivers, families, and support networks who walk this journey alongside them.

We are privileged to partner with Dementia Australia, whose involvement brings meaning and credibility to our mission. Through the garden’s design and storytelling, we seek to engage visitors emotionally and intellectually, shedding light on the struggles faced by those impacted by Dementia.

The garden’s aesthetic is a unique blend of mid-century Palm Springs charm and distinctly Australian character. From the house façade to the carport, every element is crafted to evoke warmth, boldness, and welcome. A manicured lawn, winding pathways, and a cozy front porch draw guests in and set the tone for a space that feels both familiar and inspiring.

Adaptable design elements allow the garden to suit various home styles, while the plant palette harmonizes with architectural colors, infusing the space with vivid hues and seasonal interest. Nostalgic furniture and conversation-starting accents invite visitors to pause and reflect, fostering connection and dialogue.

At its heart, this garden is more than a tribute to the past—it’s a vibrant, living space that celebrates memory, community, and resilience. It serves as a call to recognize and support those affected by Dementia, ensuring their stories are seen, heard, and honored.

Jade Built Landscape Construction
Jade Built, a Brisbane-based landscape construction company, has generously contributed both consultancy and labor to the NOSTALGIA garden. Dylan has worked alongside Paul for over 20 years, building not only stunning gardens but a lasting friendship as well. We were also lucky to have Jade Built’s lead foreman, Josh Bolger, on-site for the event—his skill, leadership, and dedication were instrumental in completing the garden to such a high standard and on schedule.

As you step into this space you are greeted by the gentle murmur and reflected light of the clear water, surrounded by the muted tones of the stone paving, rock work and rendered walls, enveloped by water-conscious greenery. The merging of water, plant life and natural elements creates an ambiance that invites you to unwind, switch off and escape the outside world.

The courtyard’s centerpiece is a shimmering azure pool that stretches gracefully beneath the radiant sun, the crystal-clear waters inviting you to take a refreshing dip, while a luxe daybed beckons you to bask in the sun’s warm embrace.

Lush foliage envelops the pool area, providing a sense of privacy and seclusion. Tall, swaying trees create a natural canopy, casting dappled shade across the pool deck and paving, lending an exotic feel to the space.

Thoughtfully placed garden lighting softly shine as evening descends, casting a magical glow transforming the pool area into a romantic haven after dark.

Two raised rock walls serve as an entrance to the garden beyond, evoking a sense of wonder and intrigue of what lies ahead.

This space represents an exercise in tectonic fluidity and meditation, an opportunity to expand a small area through the use of varying levels, textures & movement. Sharp angles are displayed yet one is able to move seamlessly throughout the dynamic garden.

Tectonic Fluidity TAKES OUT BRONZE AWARD

Whilst the flowing water juxtaposes the angular form of the pond, the viewer contemplates the meeting of nature’s shapes with those of a contemporary lifestyle. The harmonious union of elements celebrates the push towards a modern future which maintains classical beauty and embraces modern innovation.

Mother nature provides flourishing flora and flowing water; visual and auditory movement allowing space for reflection and contemplation. The chosen plants aim to convey the feeling of a soft meadow, providing a tapestry of color whilst the trees execute scale within the small space.

Concepts of the old ignite a classical atmosphere of romance, sparking a dialogue between the old and new elements. The chandeliers’ illumination offers functionality and ambiance making the ideal place for evening entertaining as well as a focal point in the daylight hours. Angular lines and sharp corners are accented by the light and represent a leap forward to the contemporary. The steel frame pergola mirrors the shape of the paving, creating an echo and highlighting an aesthetic of reflection. The open timber screen allows the viewer to borrow the landscape beyond, expanding the area yet creating a private sanctuary within.

This design aims to employ line, shadow, and form as tools to expand the perception of space, whilst using the flora and water to bind a sense of tranquility and freedom.

I never really thought too much of landscape lighting when I out with the business.

But…. it’s amazing to see how pivotal a little bit of lighting can be to shape the mood of the garden. A simple selection of low voltage lights add emotion to really can make your landscape pop. Even a simple light projecting onto a feature tree or selection of plants will make all the difference.
